Due to the end of the Spanish Civil War, the French army created mountain Chasseur battalions to protect the Pyrenean border in anticipation of a possible Spanish invasion, but also to manage the Spanish refugees who were flocking to France. Once the German offensive was launched and faced with the neutrality of Spain, these battalions were sent to fight on the eastern front as well as in the Alps.
