It was in 1831, by royal decree of August 27 that the royal agents and guards were militarized and organized in the company of guides of the Forestry administration. The various decrees that followed, including those of April 2, 1875 and November 18, 1890 made it possible to determine the military organization of the forestry corps in the event of mobilization.

A correspondence is established between the civilian hierarchical positions and the military ranks. Thus the forest ranger is a 1st class soldier up to the curator (Lieutenant-Colonel). The forest hunters have two missions: to accompany and promote the progress of the troops in the field, and to support the Engineers in supplying the armed forces with wood.

The military status of the Customs Brigades was formalized under the Third Republic by the handing over of its flag to the Customs Battalions on July 14, 1880, thus becoming the military customs corps.
